Earn Bill Credits from Your Battery Backup

Earn rewards and save on your energy bill by enrolling your home or business’s backup battery.

We reward participants for allowing us to discharge your battery energy storage system (BESS) during times of high demand on the bulk electric grid to reduce our purchased power costs.

When we draw power from your BESS, you’ll always have at least 30% of your battery remaining.

Your Battery Energy Storage System Rewards: 

  • $60/kW Upfront Enrollment Incentive: per installed kilowatt (kW) of manufacturer rated continuous capacity.
  • $20 Ongoing Participation Reward: applied each month as long as you participate.

Estimated Savings Example:

  • A Tesla PowerWall 3 with an estimated manufacturer rated continuous capacity average of 11.5 kW would equal an upfront enrollment incentive of $690.
  • The ongoing participation rewards nets you $20 per month, or $240 per year.
  • That’s $930 in total savings for the first year!

How to Enroll

  • Ensure You are Eligible to Enroll in the Program

    To participate, you must be a Poudre Valley REA member, have a permanently installed battery energy storage system (BESS) controlled by a supported battery or inverter manufacturer, and allow PVREA to operate your BESS during times of high demand on the bulk electric grid.

    Supported / Qualifying Battery systems: tesla

    Currently, only Tesla batteries are supported by the program.

    mandated Electrical Rate: A-Net

    To participate, PVREA members must be currently enrolled in or willing to switch to a net-metered electrical rate, identified as the A-Net rate. Members cannot be on a Time-of-Use (TOU) rate while participating in this program.

  • Enroll Your Battery
    1. Click the button below to enroll your battery energy storage system.
    2. Follow the prompts to create an account.
    3. Select and connect your BESS.
    4. After you sign up, PVREA staff will contact you to review your application.
    5. If your enrollment incentive is above $600, PVREA staff will collect a W-9 prior to finalizing your enrollment.

Program FAQs

  • What is a Battery Rewards Program & How Does it Work?

    We reward participating members for allowing us to discharge their battery energy storage system (BESS) during times of high demand on the bulk electric grid to reduce our purchased power costs.

    When we anticipate high demand periods on the electric grid, we activate demand response events to send operational signals to each participating BESS which includes the charge, discharge, and/or response of the battery to grid conditions as needed.

    Demand response events may occur at any time of the year, but typically occur during the hottest and coldest days in the afternoon and evening when energy demand on the grid is at its highest.

    Demand response events will not exceed 2 hours per event nor 140 total events per calendar year.

    After each demand response event is over, there will always be 30% or more of the battery power kWh remaining in your battery and its system will return to your programmed settings.

  • Am I Qualified?

    As a BESS owner, you are eligible to apply for enrollment in this program if you:

    • Are a valid PVREA member with an active electric service account in good standing.
    • Have a valid Interconnection Agreement in place with PVREA. New agreements may need to be completed during the program’s enrollment period.
    • Have an eligible BESS.
    • Own the property on which the eligible BESS is located.
    • Have an active customer account with the manufacturer of the BESS.
    • Have the BESS commissioned, operating, and connected to the internet through ethernet or a strong Wi-Fi connection.
    • Have submitted a W-9 to PVREA if your enrollment credit will exceed $600.
    • Agree to participate in the program for a period of not less than 3 years. Early termination from the program is a material breach and default of the program’s agreement and will subject to the terms and conditions below.
  • What is the Incentive for Participating?

    By enrolling and participating in the program, you earn:

    • $60/kW of manufacturer rated continuous capacity as an upfront enrollment incentive.
    • $20/month ongoing participation incentive.
  • How Much can I Expect to Earn?

    Here’s a breakdown of expected savings for a member who owns a Tesla PowerWall 3:

    • A Tesla PowerWall 3 has an estimated manufacturer rated continuous capacity average of 11.5 kW that would equal an upfront enrollment incentive of $690.
    • The ongoing participation rewards nets you $20 per month, or $240 per year.
    • That’s $930 in total savings for the first year!
  • When & How can I Expect to Receive My Incentive?

    The $60/kW of manufacturer rated continuous capacity enrollment incentive will be applied as a PVREA bill credit or mailed as a check if the total enrollment incentive is $250 or more. This upfront payment is typically applied or mailed within 6 to 8 weeks after eligibility is confirmed.

    The $20/month ongoing participation reward will be applied as a bill credit each month as long as the member participates in the program.

  • How can I Ensure that I'll Still Have Backup Energy if I Need it?

    When we draw power from your BESS, you’ll always have at least 30% of your battery remaining.

    Your BESS app is the best place to see if/when your BESS system is supporting the electric grid.

  • Can I Participate without Solar?

    Yes!

    Participants who don’t have a renewable energy system but do have a battery energy storage system that charges from the bulk electric grid may participate in the program provided an Interconnection Agreement is completed.

  • Do I Need to Maintain an Internet Connection to My Battery?

    Yes.

    If we cannot communicate with your battery energy storage system, or if your BESS cannot discharge when needed (due to a maintenance issue), you may be at risk of removal from the program for failure to participate in demand response events.

  • How Do I Unenroll / Remove Myself from the Program?

    To participate in the program, members must agree to participate for a period of not less than 3 years.

    After two years, members can opt out of the program with 30 days’s written notice. Email energyuse@pvrea.coop or mail letters to 7649 REA Parkway, Fort Collins, CO 80528.

    If a member ceases to participate in the program for any reason before the end of two years, they will be in material breach and default of the Terms and Conditions. Such defaults shall result in the unearned part of the enrollment credit to be forfeited and to become due and owing to PVREA. Repayment of the enrollment credit will be calculated on a prorated basis and be required as a one-time charge to the member’s electric service account.
